不知道同學們在練習專四習題的時候，會不會遇到這樣一種情況：不同的單詞有著相似的表達，但具體含義又不同。那麼今天我們將以limiting，restricting，restraining和confining為例，共同探索這四個單詞在使用中的不同之處。
1. 詞匯解釋
limiting
putting limits on what is possible
adj. 限制的，局限的；限制性的，制約的
v. 限制；限定（limit 的現在分詞）
（1） 局限的
restricting the scope or freedom of action
e.g. Lack of cash is a limiting factor.
現金短缺是一個制約因素。
（2） 限制性
strictly limiting the reference of a modified word or phrase
e.g. The conditions laid down to me were not too limiting.
給我定下的條件沒有太大的限制性。
restricting
n. 整形，限制；扼流
v. 限制（restrict 的 ing 形式）
If you restrict something, you put a limit on it in order to reduce it or prevent it from becoming too great.
e.g. Limited resources are restricting our capacity for developing new products.
有限的資源正制約著我們開發新產品的能力。
restraining
v. 抑制；限制；克制（情感）；剝奪……的行動自由；
（安全帶）縛住（restrain）的現在分詞
（1）制止，剝奪行動自由
If you restrain someone, you stop them from doing what they intended or wanted to do, usually by using your physical strength.
e.g. Wally gripped my arm, partly to restrain me and partly to reassure me.
沃利抓住瞭我的胳膊，部分是想制止我，部分是想安慰我。
（2）抑制，克制情感
If you restrain an emotion or you restrain yourself from doing something, you prevent yourself from showing that emotion or doing what you wanted or intended to do.
e.g. She was unable to restrain her desperate anger.
她無法抑制她那不顧一切的憤怒。
（3）限制
To restrain something that is growing or increasing means to prevent it from getting too large.
e.g. The radical 500-day plan was very clear on how it intended to try to restrain inflation.
這項激進的500天計劃在其想要如何試圖限制通貨膨脹上是非常清晰的。
confining
v. 把……局限於；限制；監禁；（使）離不開（confine 的現在分詞）
（1）將 (某事物) 控制 (在某地范圍內)
To confine something to a particular place or group means to prevent it from spreading beyond that place or group.
e.g. Health officials have successfully confined the epidemic to the Tabatinga area.
衛生官員們已經成功地將該傳染病控制在塔巴廷加地區。
（2）監禁
If you confine somebody or something, you prevent them from leaving or escaping.
e.g. He was confined in an internment camp in Utah.
他被監禁在猶他州的一個拘留營裡。
（3）將 (自己或自己的活動) 局限於
If you confine yourself or your activities to something, you do only that thing and are involved with nothing else.
e.g. He did not confine himself to the one language.
他沒把自己局限於這一門語言。
2. 習題辨析

A. limiting 通常指對諸如時間、空間、數量、能量或產品等預先作出規定，例如，limit the speed of automobiles to 4 miles an hour 限制車速在45英裡每小時。
B. restricting 意為“禁止，限制”，指把某人或物限制在一定范圍之內，通常和介間 to 連用，例如: I ’ m restricting myself to one glass of wine a day.我限制自己每天隻喝一杯酒。
C. restraining 指“抑制，制止”，一般與介詞 from 連用，例如: Barely restrained myself from hitting.我勉強控制住自己，沒有打他。
D. confining 側重施加不可逾越的限制，有時暗示束縛、囚禁，例如，You’ve confined yourself to what you know.你隻局限於你知道的事。
